THE FIRST BLACKBERRIES HARVESTED FROM MY GARDEN TODAY!

Today I picked the first juicy ripe blackberries from the bottom of my garden. I had them with ice cream and they tasted delicious!! 🙂

I have an abundance of Blackberries this year, and I’m really pleased about that because they are so loaded with nutrition and extremely healthy for you. Here’s a few quick facts about them…

  • Blackberries are high in Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Eating just half a cup of blackberries gives you 35 percent of your RDA of vitamin C and 25 percent of your RDA of vitamin K.
  • They’re packed full of fiber. It is recommended that you eat 25 to 30 grams of fiber every day aid digestion. A new UK study suggests that fiber lowers your breast cancer risk, and of course fiber helps lower your cholesterol and prevent heart disease.
  • Blackberries are high in the phytochemical Ellagic acid, an antioxidant that acts as a scavenger to help make potential cancer-causing chemicals inactive. Ellagic Acid reduces the genetic damage caused by carcinogens like tobacco smoke and air pollution. They also contain other antioxidants that help lower cholesterol and ward off cardiovascular disease.
  • The fruit’s characteristic deep purple hue is due to phytochemicals called anthocyanidins, flavonoids and cyanidin. They also contain abundant amounts of antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium.
  • Blackberries are one of the few fruits that contain heart-protective Vitamin E. The berries also strengthen blood vessels, and studies with anthocyanidins have shown they can have a positive effect on eyes, halting cataract progression and macular degeneration. They also have been reported to be instrumental in preventing heart disease, cancer and stroke.
  • Flavonoids strengthen blood vessels and capillaries. Because of this, they have been used to help conditions such as hemorrhoids, nose bleeds and varicose veins.
